It is one of cinema’s most iconic erotic scenes – with Oscar winners!

The “Oral” History Of “Fatal Attraction”!

First and foremost, remember this: “Fatal Attraction” was nominated for best picture of the year in 1987 – it was a pop culture phenomenon – that nobody wanted to make!

great fatal attraction trivia

Empire magazine Writer Mark Salisbury did a great oral history of the film in the October issue of the magazine.

It’s a great story about a great movie that lives on decades later as one of Hollywood’s most explicit shockers!

Here are some of the highlights from the magazine article!

fatal attraction trivia

What A Credit!

The opening credits include this:

“Written by James Dearden based on his original screenplay”

That’s because Dearden’s short film “Diverson” told the story that became the first third of the film – his tale of a girlfriend who slits her wrists when her boyfriend tries to break up with her. That was the end of “Diverson”, but the inspiration for the rest of “Fatal Attraction.”

Glenn Close Fatal Attraction

Producers saw the short film and asked Dearden to expand it into a feature length film…but as Producer Sherry Lansing said:

“Every studio passed on it at least twice. People would throw the script in my face and say, ‘i’m a happily married man, i would never cheat on my wife for absolutely no reason.’ They were really offended by it.”

For good reason! Some of the Oscar-nominated script included conversations like this, which began after Douglas has an affair with Close while his wife and daughter are out of town:

Fatal Attraction naked Glenn Close

Dan Gallagher: You’re so sad. You know that, Alex? Lonely and very sad.
Alex Forrest: Don’t you ever pity me, you smug bastard.
Dan Gallagher: I’ll pity you… I’ll pity you. I’ll pity you because you’re sick.
Alex Forrest: Why? Because I won’t allow you treat me like some slut you can just bang a couple of times and throw in the garbage?

And that’s what was so controversial about the film – Douglas has almost NO regret for cheating on his wife, only for being caught up in a revenge tale from a woman spurned!

best movie schokers

Brian DePalma Vs. Michael Douglas!

And then came the disasterous directorial dance with Brian DePalma, who had just made “The Untoucables” and wanted to take “Fatal Attraction” in a different direction – without Michael Douglas!

Fatal Attraction Michael Douglas

Luckily, The Producers said “no”, and DePalma left the project. Says Lansing:

“We never told Michael. He only found out many years later, after he was so hugely successful. He thought it was funny. At the time it would have really hurt him.”

Michael Douglas Fatal Attraction

And Douglass adds pointedly about Brian DePalma’s effort to replace him:

“I’ve always carried a grude with Bri. We didn’t get it resolved for like 20 years, when he came up to maat some party to try and explain. I just said, ‘Brian, it’s too late. Twenty years is too late.”

fatal-attraction-sex scenes

As for Glenn Close, she was told that she was too nice and earthy to be the vixen in the movie, so she showed up with her hair uncombed, frizzly and unmanageable…just like the character – and won them over immediately!

Close

Director Adrien Lyne said after her audition: “I remember thinking her hair was a disaster, but that’s what people remember, that kind of medusa hair.”

fatal_attraction

As Michael Douglas admitted:

“I thought she was wrong before she came and in and absolutely right after she came in. She had that sexy, erotic, dangerous quality.”

FatalAttraction

And as for the sex scenes, Michael Douglas tells some funny stories about being goofy on set to take the tension out of the moment and Glenn Close was up for anything – IF she was kept awash in alcohol.

“I said, OK Tommy (the prop guy) you have to give me a pitcher of margaritas.”

Oh, and then there is this:

Fatal Attraction bunny

“The stench was unbearable!”

Yes, it was a REAL Rabbit used in that infamous scene…a dead one with the innards taken out but the fur left on, and it smelled horrible…because they really did boil it in a pot of hot water for the scene!

Glenn Close Fatal Attraction

As For The Controversial Ending…

The film’s DVD and blu-ray releases have a lot of great stories about how the audience reacted to test screenings, including the original ending – and the magazine article goes into the controversy about that as well…

best movie schokers

The film’s original ending was bleak, with Close committing suicide…but audiences wanted more, and so reluctantly, Glenn Close agreed to let her character show a more evil side at the end…

As she says now:

“The changes that were made with the ending, for better or fore worse for Alex, made it into the sensation that it became…I’m proud to be part of that movie. its part of our collective consciousness.”

As always, it began on social media – this announcement from Radiohead’s lead singer:

“Last year we were asked to write a tune for Bond movie Spectre. Yes we were”

And with that tweet, another chapter in the “censored” James Bond theme songs is written!

Lead singer Thom Yorke announced on Twitter that Radiohead did “write a tune” for the latest film in the James Bond series, but it didn’t end up “working out”, according to him.

Fans flooded the internet with their versions of the film’s opening titles – with the Radiohead song – take a look!

Sam Smith was ultimately chosen to record the movie’s theme song, “Writing on the Wall,” which in my opinion is an AWFUL Bond song – no sense of the history of the series at all – just a drab ballad that didn’t make a dent in the charts…

John Lennon Flaming Pie Quote

“It came in a vision – a man appeared on a flaming pie and said unto them, ‘from this day on you are Beatles with an A.’ ”

And with those words, John Lennon gave Paul McCartney the title to one of his best solo albums!

Paul McCartney Flaming Pie

Time To Sizzle With “Flaming Pie!”

“Flaming Pie” was McCartney’s tenth solo album, released in 1997. It is full of classic Macca tunes, and a ton of great celebrity musicians joining him, including Ringo!

Beatles Hollywood Bowl color

The Spelling Of “The Beatles” Leads To Flaming Pie!

The title of Paul’s solo album is a reference to a story John Lennon told in Mersey Beat magazine in 1961. He was explaining the origin of the Beatles’ name:

“It came in a vision – a man appeared on a flaming pie and said unto them, ‘from this day on you are Beatles with an A.’ “

Thanks, John! Now, let’s get right to the incredible music on “Flaming Pie”! Here is Paul performing the title track live at Glastonbury in 2004:

Paul McCartney Flaming Pie

“Flaming Pie” is a terrific song, perhaps because Paul had taken some time off to work on the “Beatles Anthology” – in fact, this was McCartney’s first studio album in four years!

Paul and James Macca

The album featured McCartney’s son James, along with a lot of other Musicians. In the album’s liner notes, McCartney said the music was helped by his recent work on the Beatles Anthology project:

“It reminded me of The Beatles’ standards and the standards that we reached with the songs. So in a way it was a refresher course that set the framework for this album.”

Here is a look at the “Flaming Pie” track list:

Paul_McCartney-Flaming_Pie-Tracklist

The album has no filler whatsoever – there are catchy songs, great musicianship, and an energy behind it…”Flaming Pie” stands tall alongside the best music of his career…

In The World Tonight Paul McCartney

At the time of the album’s release, Macca released a video showing the making of the album called “In The World Tonight”, which is a slight variation on the title of one of the songs on the album…here is the great music video:

Linda McCartney RIP

Steve Miller Joins Macca!

McCartney wrote another terrific song, “Young Boy” while his wife Linda was making lunch for a New York Times writer in 1994. A few months later, Steve Miller joined McCartney at his home studio to record the song, which is one of his best – it evokes the “Rubber Soul” era, in my opinion.

Here is the music video for “Young Boy”:

Steve miller fly like an eagle

I am a big fan of Steve Miller, and have written about his music. If you want to read more, check out his brilliant 70’s music here:

Another great musical Artist – and Paul’s closest friend – is on the album as well, in spirit:

John Lennon Paul McCartney

“The Song We Were Singing!”

Paul wrote “The Song We Were Singing” about the time when he and John Lennon lived at 20 Forthlin Road, in the early days of the band.

Since the song was about Paul’s friendship with John, a fan put together a great tribute video – check it out!

The songs on “Flaming Pie” like “Song We Were Singing” are nostalgic, but also energetic and upbeat as well – a collection of great songs with poignant lyrics and catchy hooks…and Ringo too!

Beautiful Night Paul McCartney

Ringo And Macca Reunite!

Yes, Ringo also participated in the “Flaming Pie” sessions! Ringo and McCartney recorded a track that McCartney had started working on a decade before, the gorgeous “Beautiful Night”.

Here is the great music video, with Ringo on drums. The song begins with a beautiful melody, and crescendos with a great celebratory ending!

Paul McCartney Beautiful Night

What a terrific song, which ends the album on an upbeat note! Well, the album has a coda, which we will discuss in a moment…first, one more special guest to introduce!

Jeff Lynne live performance

ELO’s Jeff Lynne Flames On!

The day after Paul and Ringo recorded “Beautiful Night”, ELO’s Jeff Lynne showed up at the studio!

Lynne was, of course, one of The Traveling Wilburys with George Harrison, and a huge Beatles fan. Ringo, Paul and Lynn jammed for awhile in the studio, which became the song “Really Love You”, the first track credited to “McCartney–Starkey”!

Paul McCartney Flaming Pie

“Flaming Pie” was a huge success for McCartney, peaking at number two in both the UK and US and selling over 1.5 million copies!

Paul and Linda McCartney

Linda’s Last Album!

As I mentioned, there is a coda to “Flaming Pie” – it was the last album that Paul and Linda sang together on…in the final short song that evokes “The Lovely Linda” from Paul’s first solo album…

Paul and Linda McCartney

“When you’re wide awake say it for goodness sake
It’s gonna be a great day
While you’re standing there get up and grab a chair
It’s gonna be a great day”

Linda McCartney Flaming Pie

“Great Day” features backing vocals from Linda McCartney – interestingly, the song was actually recorded in 1992. It’s a touching end to the album. Linda died from breast cancer in 1998.

It’s a beautiful coda to one of McCartney’s greatest albums…

paul-mccartney-ram

The Paul And Linda Mccartney Album!

“Flaming Pie” was McCartney’s tenth solo album, and the last one with participation from Linda. There is only one album from Macca that was credited entirely to “Paul and Linda McCartney” – the brilliant “RAM.”

RIP David Bowie…

This has shocked music fans around the world…the announcement that David Bowie has died of cancer at the age of 69.

“Look Up Here, I’m In Heaven”

These are the first words of his music video just released…here is the brand new song “Lazarus”:

“Black Star” was released late last week on the singer’s birthday, and it’s a prescient look at what he knew was ahead…

I was just listening to one of my favorite albums of his, and was planning on posting about it…

David Bowie Diamond Dogs

“They Call Them The Diamond Dogs!”

“Diamond Dogs” was Bowie’s 1974 concept album: a marriage of the novel “Nineteen Eighty-Four” by George Orwell and Bowie’s take on a future that was a bit like the film “Escape From New York.”

RIP bowie_diamond_dogs

Bowie had tried to license Orwell’s book for a theatrical play but was denied, and so the album was released, with a song “1984” included.

Here is a live version of the title track from 1996 I found on youtube…an updated feel to the song, but with the same great Bowie theatrics:

DAvid Bowie RIP

The album is also known for one of his biggest hits, “Rebel Rebel”…here is a great version of that song as well – from the era in which it was recorded:

RIP Alan Rickman!

More sad news: great Character Actor Alan Rickman has died. He achieved stardom for his first movie role: dastardly criminal Hans Gruber in the classic “Die Hard” – but Rickman’s career was varied, everything from period dramas like “Sense & Sensibility” to the blockbuster fantasy series “Harry Potter”:

And of course, he was also in one of the best holiday films ever: “Love Actually.”

Here’s a look at two of his greatest roles!

Die Hard Poster

BOW DOWN AND “DIE HARD”!

Perhaps the best action film ever, it was the movie that made Bruce Willis a superstar, playing New York City Detective John McClane, who arrives in Los Angeles to spend Christmas with his wife. Unfortunately, it is not going to be a Merry Christmas for everyone. A group of terrorists, led by Hans Gruber, is holding everyone in the Nakatomi Plaza building hostage.

die-hard RIP Alan Rickman

Hello, Hans Gruber!

Alan Rickman steals the film – his first! – as the bad guy Hans Gruber, because he plays the character in an understated, sarcastic manner instead of as the “BAD GUY!”

Here’s the first exchange, by walkie talkie, between Rickman and Willis:

Hans Gruber: [on the radio] Mr. Mystery Guest? Are you still there?
John McClane: Yeah, I’m still here. Unless you wanna open the front door for me.
Hans Gruber: Uh, no, I’m afraid not. But, you have me at a loss. You know my name but who are you? Just another American who saw too many movies as a child? Another orphan of a bankrupt culture who thinks he’s John Wayne? Rambo? Marshal Dillon?
John McClane: Was always kinda partial to Roy Rogers actually. I really like those sequined shirts.
Hans Gruber: Do you really think you have a chance against us, Mr. Cowboy?
John McClane: Yippee-ki-yay, motherfucker.

The scene in which Gruber and McClane meet was inserted into the script after Rickman was found to be proficient at mimicking American accents. The filmmakers had been looking for a way to have the two characters meet prior to the climax and capitalized on Rickman’s talent. It is one of the film’s highlights.

Hans: [Hans uses McClane’s gun and says something in an uninterpreted German on his CB Radio] Put down the gun, and give me my detonators.
John McClane: Well, well, well… Hans.
Hans: Put it down now.
John McClane: That’s pretty tricky with that accent. You oughta be on fucking TV with that accent. But what do you want with the detonators, Hans? I already used all the explosives. Or did I?
Hans: I’m going to count to three…
John McClane: Yeah, like you did with Takagi?
John McClane: [Hans pulls trigger] Ooops.
[Hans pulls the trigger a few times more]
John McClane: No more bullets. What do you think, I’m fucking stupid, Hans?
Hans: [elevator opens] You were saying?

Rickman’s First Movie!

“Die Hard” was Rickman’s first film. He got the role just after arriving in Los Angeles, and he almost turned it down!

Alan Rickman RIP Hans Gruber Die Hard

Luckily, he took the part in an action movie and it made him a star!

Rickman went on to act in a number of popular movies, but one has become a holiday classic!

Love actually

“Love Actually” is a series of inter-locking stories that take place during the holiday season: some are funny, and a few are sad – with an all-star cast including Rickman, Kiera Knightley, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Laura Linney, Hugh Grant and Emma Thompson.

best holiday movies

Rickman plays a husband who is being pulled away from his family by a young co-worker…not the most upbeat of holiday stories, but Rickman handles the subject matter well…

alan rickman rip love_actually_008

His honest portrayal of an unfaithful husband gives the movie weight, and helps maintain a balance of humor, happiness, and emotional depth that makes the film a classic.

Rickman’s most recent film was one he directed as well: “A Little Chaos” with Kate Winslet

Alex and I are going to seek it out to pay tribute to his work and legacy…

The True Story About A Brilliant Musical Mashup! David Bowie Sings With Freddie Mercury!

In looking back at David Bowie’s incredible career, there is one very unique song he wrote – or co-wrote that is! It’s one of music’s best-loved songs: Queen teaming up with David Bowie for the classic “Under Pressure!”

Freddie Mercury performing

It’s a song that was fueled by lots of wine and other substances – well, according to folklore…so just how did David Bowie end up recording with Queen?

mercury-bowie-under-pressure

It All Began In Switzerland….

Doesn’t everything? Well, in this case, Queen had been working on the song – at the time called “Feel Like”, at a recording studio in Montreux, Switzerland. David Bowie was a friend and came by to sing backing vocals on another Queen song, “Cool Cat”…

under pressure song trivia

They started jamming together on “Feel Like”, and they ended up with “Under Pressure!” Queen Guitarist Brian May told Mojo magazine in October 2008 that:

“It was hard, because you had four very precocious boys and David, who was precocious enough for all of us. David took over the song lyrically. Looking back, it’s a great song but it should have been mixed differently. Freddie and David had a fierce battle over that. It’s a significant song because of David and its lyrical content.”

bowie-mercury

Here is a terrific, fan-created acapella mashup of the song, focusing on performances by each singer:

David Bowie Under Pressure Queen

Author Mark Blake wrote a terrific biography called “Is This the Real Life?: The Untold Story of Freddie Mercury and Queen.” His book has a few more choice bits about the recording…

Layout 1 (Page 1)

Blake writes that Bowie and Mercury “swap[ped] verses blind, which helped give the song its cut-and-paste feel.”

And stories abound that the band and Bowie enjoyed copious amounts of wine – and other substances while recording the song.

Freddie Mercury And Queen

Brian May gives an in-depth look at every facet of the recording of the song, which he admits begins with a lot of wine at a local restaurant…but he also gives a lot of terrific insight about the creative process at work – which began when Guitarist John Deacon played 6 chords for Bowie:

“Ding-Ding-Ding Diddle Ing-Ding!”

Here is how May described what happened next:

“Suddenly hunger took over and we repaired to a local restaurant for food and a fair amount of drink. (Local Vaux wine as drunk in Montreux is a well-kept secret).

A couple or three hours later, we’re back in the studio. “What was that riff, you had, Deacy?” says David B. “I was like this”, says John Deacon.

“No it wasn’t, says Bowie – it was like this”.

This was a funny moment because I can just see DB going over and putting his hand on John’s fretting hand and stopping him.

It was also a tense moment because it could have gone either way.”

David Bowie Under Pressure Queen

So Bowie’s interest in those 6 chords led to the recording of a masterpiece – and you can read how it all came together by clicking on May’s interview with The Mirror here:

Provocative dialogue like this can only be from one classic film:

“Eugenie!” Her Journey Into Perversion! Christopher Lee’s Most Shocking Movie!

Yes, the Marquis de Sade’s most disturbing work was made into a cult classic, now being released on a great blu-ray!

new Eugenie S&M bluray release

As you can see, legendary Actor Christopher Lee stars in the film – except he doesn’t!

It’s a classic Hollywood tale: an Actor makes a movie he immediately regrets…but in this case, the Actor is barely even in the film! Time to look into the madness of:

eugenie-the-story-of-her-journey-into-perversion

“Eugenie! The Story Of Her Journey Into Perversion!”

I have posted about the films of Director Jess Franco before: he was one of Europe’s most notorious soft-core sex Auteurs, with many of the films starring his wife, the legendary Lina Romay.

Nude Lina Romay

As you can see from the subtitles, Franco was obsesses with sex: sex of all kinds. So it’s no wonder he made the greatest adaptation of a Marquis de Sade’s notorious work:

Marquis de Sade sex movie

Here is the plot:

Eugenie lives with her stepfather, a famous writer of erotica. One day she reads one of his “erotic” books and she finds herself sexually attracted to her stepfather. He notices this, and eventually brings her into his dark world of sexual perversion and murder!

Well, then check out this movie trailer!

Eugenie nude film

What follows is a whole lot of nudity, shocking sexuality, and Christopher Lee – yes, CHRISTOPHER LEE!

eugenie- christopher lee

Christopher Lee’s “Shocking” Performance!

As you can see from the movie poster, the film is “guest starring Christopher Lee”…yes, the same Christopher Lee who was in some of the greatest films ever, like “The Lord Of The Rings”…

The Lord Of The Rings Christopher Lee

Christopher Lee’s Sex Movie!

So how did this legendary Actor end up in a European S & M film? Well, it’s a great story that shows what can happen in Hollywood – and the best part is, we can hear from the legendary Actor himself about it!

the films of christopher lee book

Lee spoke candidly about his role in “Eugenie” in the book “The Films of Christopher Lee”. Here is his great recollection of the events surrounding his role, beginning with him hearing that another legendary Actor was hired for the movie:

“George Sanders was to have done the picture; for some reason, he was not able to. Then a distinguished German actor was hired. On arriving in Barcelona, where the picture was made, he received word his wife had been killed in an accident. So someone in the production rang me up and asked me if I would come to Barcelona and do it on Saturday afternoon and Sunday, and then go back home. The part was that of Domance, who narrates the story.”

eugenie- christopher lee

“I saw no reason not to do it: after all, George Sanders, the German actor, etc… So I went to Barcelona. Six months later, to my dismay, I was walking along Old Compton Street, in London, and to my horror I saw this film advertised at the kind of cinema that only shows exploitation films. It seems after I had left, they shot a lot of similar scenes in which everybody took their clothes off. In one scene, I had my back to the action, and behind me it showed some naked girl. This was created by the cutting. I wasn’t pleased. I made my feelings known, but it was to no avail”.

eugenie-de-sade

So there you have it, Lee acts in a film without even knowing what the film was about! That said, the film was just released in a terrific blu-ray package, because it is regarded as Franco’s finest film – even if he pulled a fast one on Lee!

new Eugenie S&M bluray release

This new blu-ray release includes some interview material with Lee as well, so you can hear more about the making of the film, and the “fast one” Franco pulled on the legendary Actor!

This doesn’t seem to surprise me – after all, Jess Franco wasn’t shy about exploiting anyone and everyone, including his wife!

Hardcore Paul McCartney fans know and love all of his music – but for the more casual fan, there are some Macca albums that flew under the radar, especially in the 90’s…

Paul McCartney & Wings were one of the biggest musical acts of the 70’s…in the 80’s Paul went solo again, with big hits like “Tug Of War” and “Pipes Of Peace”…

Paul McCartney Pipes Of Peace

By the end of the decade, however, McCartney’s POP musical output slowed a bit…while “Flowers In The Dirt” was successful in 1989, Macca spent time working on the classical music of “Liverpool Oratorio”, so McCartney’s ninth solo album, “Off The Ground” wasn’t released until 1993.

“Off The Ground” was his first studio album of the 90’s, but several years had passed, and musical tastes were now going toward grunge…McCartney, however, continued to write songs that were were pure Macca…which may have resulted in an album that didn’t resonate at the time.

Off The Ground Paul McCartney music

Celebrating The Forgotten “Off The Ground!”

The album gets off to a joyous start with the title track, a celebratory pop song that has great harmonies and energy. Here’s the music video, with Linda!

“Looking For Changes!”

“I saw a cat with a machine in his brain
The man who fed him said he didn’t feel any pain
I’d like to see that man take out that machine
And stick it in his own brain, you know what I mean”

McCartney takes on the issue of medical experiments on animals in a driving rocker – here is a great video:

paul mccartney hope of deliverance

“Hope Of Deliverance!”

In the 90’s, Paul had been away for a few years, and some of McCartney’s strongest work slipped under the radar…this song should have been big hit for him…but it barely charted. Here is the music video, with Linda and the whole band:

Paul McCartney music videos

“Mistress and Maid” came next on the album, from McCartney’s songwriting collaboration with Elvis Costello, but unlike “Flowers in the Dirt”, Costello did not appear on “Off the Ground.” “I Owe It All To You” followed, a mid-tempo ballad with a nice harmony…

Paul+McCartney+and+Wings+Biker+Like+An+Icon+25119

“Biker Like An Icon”

This is one of the album’s more polarizing songs – I have seen fans mention songs left off the album they felt were stronger than this one, but Paul clearly liked it because here is the great music video he made to support it:

paul mccartney hidden songs peace in the neighborhood

“Peace In The Neighborhood”

This is one of my favorites from the album: such a positive, joyous song with a gorgeous melody – here is a great live performance from 1993 that I found on youtube:

Paul McCartney live Peace In The Neighborhood

“Golden Earth Girl” is one of Macca’s most beautiful ballads, and “The Lovers That Never Were” is a slightly angry shout about a love affair that never was…it was the second song on the album co-written with Elvis Costello – perhaps that is why there is a bit of a caustic edge to it…”Get Out Of My Way” is next, a fast-paced rocker with good energy.

paul mccartney winedark open sea lyrics

“Winedark Open Sea”

This is one of Macca’s most beautiful ballads, an album track that is allowed to flow like a fine wine…while there isn’t a music video for this beautiful song, I did find an alternate take that was posted by a fan – a funky and fast version by Paul…very interesting!

“C’Mon People!”

McCartney ends the album with a call to action:

“So c’mon people let the world begin
We’ve got a future and it’s charging in
We’ll make the best of all we have and more
We’ll do what never has been done before”

The message is clear – we have to get our act together, but the song ends on an upbeat, hopeful note…here is the terrific music video, in black and white until the incredible explosion of color at 4:22!

off the ground songs

Macca’s “Cosmically Conscious” Outtakes!

At the end of “C’mon People”, Paul adds a sliver of “Cosmically Conscious” – but a longer version is just one of many tracks that have shown up on extended versions of the album and as B-sides around the world!

Some additional songs including “Big Boys Bickering”, “Style Style” and “Kicked Around No More” were released later, showing that McCartney had a treasure trove of great songs…

Here is a live version of “Cosmically Conscious”…

best Paul McCartney music Off The Ground

So there you have it – album full of great songs, energy and passion…so what went wrong?

“Off The Ground” never took off, peaking at a low #17 on the US charts, and didn’t have a single hit song!

Paul McCartney live Peace In The Neighborhood

Personally, I think the album lacked one killer hit, and McCartney had taken a few years off, and grunge came in to take over music…leaving the album to fade away quickly.

While “Off The Ground” wasn’t a massive hit, McCartney came back again – delivering one of his greatest albums ever, “Flaming Pie”.

Paul McCartney Flaming Pie

“Flaming Pie” was named by John Lennon, and Ringo played on it…it was a triumphant return for McCartney. Read about this Macca Masterpiece by clicking on my story here:

Why Billy Idol matters

“Rebel Yell” Indeed! “The Wedding Planner”! Why Billy Idol Matters!

It’s more than just the music – it’s the sneer, the swagger, the “Billy Idol-ness” of him – it’s time to remind you why Billy Idol matters!

Billy Idol has been a music icons for decades, with such smash hits as “Rebel Yell”, “White Wedding” and “Dancing With Myself” – but he is also so much more!

First, let’s get to this amazing piece of film trivia:

Terminator 2 Trivia

Billy Idol Starred As T-1000 in “Terminator 2!”

Well, he was supposed to! James Cameron hired Billy to play the legendary bad robot T-1000 in “Terminator 2”, but shortly before filming was to begin in 1990, Idol was in a motorcycle accident in Hollywood! His injuries were so bad he was unable to perform in the film. The role then went to Robert Patrick – who did an amazing job!

billyidol

Cue The Bio!

Here’s some biographical information about Billy Idol, who was born William Michael Albert Broad in Stanmore, Middlesex, England. The name Billy Idol was inspired by a school teacher’s description of Broad as “idle”. In an interview in 1983, Idol said the name:

“was a bit of a goof, but also part of the old English school of rock. Billy Fury and all that. It was a ‘double thing’ not just a poke at the superstar-like people … It was fun, you know?”

Billy Idol Generation X

Idol was a member of the 70’s punk rock band Generation X before launching his own solo career in the 80’s, hitting it big with hits like this:

Rebel Yell!

“Rebel Yell” showcased Idol’s swagger, arrogance and ability to command a stage.

Here is the “unbelievably a part of the 80’s” music video!

White Wedding!

Idol had a lot of great songs, from the ballad “Eyes Without A Face” to “Dancing With Myself” and this classic rocker.

Here is the hilariously entertaining 80’s video for “White Wedding”:

Billy Idol Rocks “The Wedding Singer!”

One of the best cameo appearances ever is when Billy Idol shows up at the end of the Adam Sandler / Drew Barrymore comedy “The Wedding Singer.”

First, here is the trailer:

This is Adam Sandler’s best film: a sweet, romantic and very funny comedy starring Sandler as a Wedding singer who is helps bride-to-be Drew Barrymore plan her wedding.

Of course, Drew’s husband-to-be in the film is a total dick, and at the end of the movie, Sandler enlists the help of Billy Idol in a hilarious way:

The memoir was a smash hit, and the book reminded people about Billy Idol and his impact on pop culture. EVERYONE remembers those classic MTV music videos. So time has been good to Billy: he shows up on TV and in film, has a bestselling book, and still tours worldwide as well!

Hitchhiking horror films

Ever Wanted To “Take To The Road?”

It’s the favorite mode of transportation for the young and free – stick your thumb out and see the world!

hitchhiker poster 2

Well, that doesn’t sound nice! You see, life “on the road” isn’t all Jack Kerouac…it’s a dangerous world as well!

the hitchhikers sex movie

“Thumbs Up! Knives out!”

Time to look at the exploitation movie genre focused on hitchhiking – and just how horrifically dangerous it can be!

Young and Wild (1958)

“The Scorching, Reckless Joy Rides Of Wild Girls Of The Road!”

As early as 1958, shrewd movie Producers figured out that women out on the road alone were great fodder for exploitation, especially when filmed in “naturama!”

hitchhiker poster

And a few years earlier, Hollywood knew that life on the road was a thriller! Take a look at this film noir classic from 1952, written and directed by famous movie star Ida Lupino!

hitchhiker poster 2

Teenage Hitchhikers

In the 70’s, the relaxation of indecency and obscenity rules meant that these hitchhiking films could get more and more outrageous!

the hitchhikers sex movie

hitch_hike_to_hell_sexploitation

“There Is No Such Thing As A Free Ride!”

As you can see, there is no such thing as a “safe ride”! In the 70’s, drive-in theaters were filled with wild exploitative films like this:

Pick-Up

“It Was The Longest Ride Of Her Life!”

As you can see, the movie posters promised a film full of young women making bad decisions and paying the price – but these movies were more likely to involve lots of nudity AND revenge!

Hitch-Hike_(film)

“Hitch Hike!”

European star Franco Nero starred in this cult film, now being re-discovered thanks to DVD and blu-ray! Here is the trailer for this forgotten classic:

Hitch-Hike-Franco-Nero-David-Hess-Corinne-Clery

“Hitch Hike” is a psychological thriller that is a rough 70’s gem – but perhaps the most iconic film dealing with the horror of hitchhiking is the 80’s classic “The Hitcher” with Rutger Hauer!

The Hitcher horror film

Take A Ride With “The Hitcher!”

This cult classic from 1986 tells a straightforward tale: a young man who escapes from a crazed hitch-hiker – then finds himself framed for the “hitchers” crimes!

As you can see, NOTHING good happens when you pick up a hitchhiker, no matter what these posters suggest!

This is just one category of exploitation film that is so much fun to watch – another classic of exploitation is this one:

the naughty stewardesses movie

The Sinful Dwarf

Say Hello To The Face Of Exploitation Cinema!

Someone asked me to explain the phenomenon of exploitation cinema – an era from the late 60’s to the mid-80’s when movies pushed boundaries and broke taboos…and resulted in some of the most deranged and entertaining films of all time!

42nd street

Welcome To Times Square!

It all began in New York’s Times Square, at a time when it was more dangerous to be IN THE THEATER than it was to be on the streets!

42nd_St,_NYC,_Lyric_Theatre,_1985

Time To Talk About All Forms Of Movie ‘Sploitation!

These movie theaters in Times Square were open 24 hours a day, showing some of the weirdest films ever made!

“Exploitation” films were also known as “Grindhouse” films, because they played New York’s 42nd street theaters all day and night…look at what a seedy scene it was at the time:

new york grindhouse

You can take a trip down memory lane with a story I posted about this unique time in cinema…just click here:

http://johnrieber.com/2012/11/23/sex-violence-grindhouse-have-a-purient-holiday-an-exploitation-gift-guide/

Hard to imagine that this is what Times Square used to look like – but it’s a part of movie history that has disappeared…except on home video and on demand, where these films are having a re-birth!

Sugar Cookies grindhouse

A “David Hasselhoff” Moment!

Here’s a look at the kind of films that were shown in Times Square in the 70’s and early 80’s…from the subtle to the ridiculous – and with David Hasselhoff too!

DAvid Hasselhoff Boner

“Hello, Boner”! Time For Classic “Exploitation”!

Yes, there were recognizable stars in some of the more “mainstream” exploitation films of the era, including David Hasselhoff who starred as “Boner” is one of the more hilarious examples – movies with lots of topless girls, subtle sexual situations, mostly “R”-rated, or soft “X” – nothing too controversial, just good clean naughty fun like this:

x-rated cheerleaders

The “Cheerleader” genre was silly, good-natured fun, with just enough skin shown to keep teenage boys flocking to the movies…here’s a good primer of the genre:

http://johnrieber.com/2015/02/19/cheerleaders-pom-pom-girls-david-hasselhoff-as-boner-cult-classics-rah-rah-rah/

These films could play drive-in theaters all around the country…not too extreme for rural audiences…

Lorna+The+Exorcist

In the 70’s, it was up to the Europeans to give us a “harder” look at the genre, “art” films that featured lots of sex and violence – films that proudly celebrated being called:

the hot nights of Linda

HOT HOT HOT “SEX-Sploitation!”

Grindhouse theaters were inundated in the early 70’s with films from Europe that blew the doors off the buildings they were shown in: sex kittens like Lina Romay showed off EVERYTHING in every movie!

Lina Romay naked

Romay made a series of films with her husband, Director Jess Franco, that were provocative, explicitly sexual and eye-popping!

lina-romay Female Vampire

Lina Romay banana

One of their most notorious is “The Hot Nights Of Linda”, with the censored “banana” scene….which you can now see on a newly released blu-ray edition of the film…read all about it here:

Linda’s Shocking “Hot” Nights! Lina Romay’s Classic Sexploitation!

Not all films of that era from Europe were this “shocking”…which leads to the next “s-ploitation” genre known as:

classic sexploitation movies

“ART-Sploitation”!

What exactly is this? “Sinner” is a perfect example – “artsploitation” films came from Europe, beginning with the shocking film that started it all:

I Am Curious Yellow

“I Am Curious (Yellow)” was brought up on obscenity charges, but when they won their case, the floodgates were open to a lot of wild films from Europe – these
movies were chock full of sexual situations and full nudity – but with social issues of the day thrown in as well…making it supposedly a more “artistic” endeavor….like this:

Christina Lindberg Maid

Meet Christina Lindberg, The “Queen Of Artsploitation!”

I have written about all of Lindberg’s films – this Swedish Star made some of the best “Artsploitation” films of the 70’s, like these:

Sex Kitten Christina Lindberg

Christina Lindberg was a huge star in the 70’s – Her most provocative movie, which Quentin Tarantino used as an inspiration for “Kill Bill”, was the classic “Thriller: A Cruel Picture” AKA “They Call Her One-Eye!”

Christina Lindberg Speaks! The “Queen Of Artsploitation” Bares All!

While Christina was nude throughout all of her films, the movies themselves tried to tell compelling, intelligent stories…THIS “S-ploitation” genre, however, didn’t bother!

sinful dwarf nudity

Welcome To The Wacky World Of “Dwarf-Sploitation”!

Well, you knew it had to lead to this: one of the most exploitive movies ever released, thanks of course to the Europeans! Time to meet The Sinful Dwarf!

The Sinful Dwarf

This movie has NO redeeming social values, and isn’t that why we are watching?

And now, the terrific home video company Severin Films is bringing this “Dwarf” back on blu-ray!

The Sinful Dwarf blu-ray

Severin films The Sinful Dwarf

The new blu-ray includes a ton of special features, including a look at the cast and crew!

Of course, one of my favortie stories of all is the disappearing starlet of “Sinful Dwarf”, Anne Sparrow. It was her only film, and then she disappeared from movie screens forever!

These films in the 70’s made it to the US and helped open the door to a more explicit era in film…some wacky 70’s exploitation films, however, never left their country of origin – like these!

Sex and fury nude poster

Time For Some “J-Sploitation!”

Welcome to wild and wacky Japan! The genre known as “J-Sploitation” dealt with Japanese sexploitation films – also called:

“Pink Films”!

These movies were about girls who got into trouble and had to fight their way out!

pinky violence

These films evoke a style like “Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!” and are definitely worth checking out!

country_cuzzins hicksploitation

Hick-sploitation!

Yes, right here in the heartland of the US of A, your “Country Cuzzins” are ready to party!

These movies are called “hick-Sploitation”, and they usually deal with country girls down on the farm who are ready to “get down”!

These films evolved into more mainstream fare like “Gator Bait” and “White Lightning” with Burt Reynolds…just good old boys having some fun…back in Europe however, things just got darker and darker…

hannad-cover

Shoot Up Some “Drug-Sploitation!”

This genre of “S-ploitation” had a short run in the US, with serious films like “The Panic In Needle Park” with Al Pacino:

Al Pacino The Panic In Needle Park

Junkies on the streets of New York have movie stars attached, while in Europe, heroin addiction was just another plot point in films full of sex and violence like this:

http://johnrieber.com/2012/07/11/virgins-from-hell-plus-dead-virgins-too-oh-and-hannas-hooked-on-smack-exploitation-lives-on/

As you can see, Europeans dealt with social issues in one way, in the US it was a bit more humorous…like this genre:

Haji motorcycle movie naked chicks

Rev Up Some Classic “Hog-Sploitation”!

Yes, biker chicks was the rage in the 70’s – tough girls who could kick ass and take names!

Here is a list of some of the best:

And there is one genre I could never support:

Raquel Welch as sexy nun

“Nun-Sploitation!”

This genre was touched upon a bit when Raquel Welch played the sexiest “cleave-flaunting” nun of all time:

Raquel Welch the Nun

Yes, Raquel dipped her breasts into the “euro-sleaze” genre in a big way!

“Euro-sleaze” is a type of movie made in Europe that didn’t even pretend to have any socially redeeming qualities – but big stars would make them because there was money to be made!

Fishing With The Beatles!

Growing up in Seattle, I always heard the stories about how rock bands would fish out of their hotel room windows from the legendary Edgewater hotel!

As you can see the hotel is right on the water – and I always heard stories that The Beatles actually fished from their rooms when staying there – and it was true! Look at these amazing photos!

Yes, The Beatles enjoyed some down time when they visited Seattle in 1964 – and since the Edgewater Hotel is right on Puget Sound, they ALL really did go fishing!

These are just some of the fascinating pictures from “Beatlemania”, when the Fab Four would hold spirited press conferences in every city they visited!

The Beatles Know How To Throw A Punch!

Some of the most hilarious Beatles quotes came from these press conferences, like this one:

Reporter: “They think your haircuts are un-American.”
John: “Well, it was very observant of them because we aren’t American, actually.”

John’s acerbic wit wowed the press – along with Paul, George and Ringo as well…and they got to meet some of America’s greatest entertainers!

The Beatles Muhammad Ali

Yes, The Beatles Knew How To Take A Punch, Too!

According to a Facebook comment by Scott Mantz, this photo shoot was set up by Dezo Hoffman, the official photographer who joined The Beatles on their first US visit (when this photo was taken) — John in particular was SO humiliated by this, he didn’t speak to Hoffman for months!!

To me, the photos are hilarious, but if ANY ONE of The Beatles wouldn’t like this, it would have been John!

Ringo, on the other hand, didn’t seem to mind at all!

Great pics from The Beatles are always fun to see, perhaps none more so than the outtakes from the iconic “Abbey Road” shoot!

One of the greatest documentaries ever is “Let It Be”, the story of the making of the album…

Let-It-Be-1970

It was, of course, a disaster…John was sullen and alienated the others by bringing Yoko into the studio – at one point in a hospital bed! It created bad blood between them – but they rallied of course with their last live performance ver, from the roof of their office building in London:

Hollywood is such a funny place…critical and commercial acclaim one day can lead to direct-to-video films the next…the key is to keep working, no matter what the role is…there have been so many great movie stars – and virtually all have unique – and sometimes offbeat films – on their resumes…here’s a look at one such “True Hollywood Story: the talented Actress Olivia Hussey!

Olivia Rocks The Yellow Jumpsuit!

As I mentioned, everyone has a “strange choice, huh?” moment on their resume, and it’s no different for Actress Olivia Hussey. First, some background: she was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and first appeared on the London stage as Jenny in “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie”, opposite Vanessa Redgrave. That’s where Italian film director Franco Zeffirelli first spotted her.

Hussey was chosen out of 500 actresses to star as Juliet in Zeffirelli’s smash hit 1968 film “Romeo and Juliet”.

Even though the film is a dark thriller, Hussey says the movie set was a very light and happy between takes. She did admit that Margot Kidder was distant from cast/crew during the filming.

Kier Dullea

What A Cast!

In addition to Hussey and Kidder, Kier Dullea also stars in the movie – Dullea of course was in Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece, “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

BLACK_CHRISTMAS_HD_1265

Keir Dullea worked only for a week on this film, never meeting Margot Kidder and barely meeting John Saxon, but the film is edited in such a way that he appears to be present throughout the film…

During an interview with Bob Clark, the Director said Hussey’s decision to star in the film was based upon advice given to her by a psychic. According to Clark, Hussey said her psychic believed that the film would be successful and a wise career choice for her. She took the role.

Steve Martin Roxanne

Meeting Steve Martin!

Hussey continued to act in film and TV for the next decade. Around 1986, she met Steve Martin to discuss a role in his hit film “Roxanne”, and Martin said this to Olivia:

“Oh my God Olivia, you were in one of my all time favorite films”!

Hussey assumed it was for “Romeo and Juliet” – and was surprised to find out that Martin loved “Black Christmas”, claiming to have seen it over 20 times!

Talking Turkey!

Finally, here is that “why would she do this film?” role – one of Hussey’s most unique movies was this sci-fi cult classic:

best Hollywood nude scenes

1981’s “Turkey Shoot!”

This futuristic thriller involved prisoners who were set free so they could be hunted down by rich people! A very unique choice for Hussey:

As I said, when you are a working Actor in Hollywood, the key is to work. And this movie has become a cult classic. One of the most interesting aspects of the film was Hussey’s choice to do a nude shower scene in the film!

“Blu” Turkey!

The film is full of crazy action sequences – and Hussey does a great job in the film, along with Steve Railsback – “Turkey Shoot” has built up a great cult reputation – and now it’s been remastered on blu-ray! Read all about this thriller by clicking on my story here:

As for Hussey, she is now a very successful voice over talent in “Batman Beyond”, and also voiced the character of Kasan Moor in the PC game, “Star Wars: Rogue Squadron”. She was also in “Star Wars: The Old Republic”.

So there’s a look at a “True Hollywood Star” who did Shakespeare, horror and sci-fi equally well!

As you can see from her credits, Hussey has had a very successful career in entertainment.

I am fascinated by Artists who have long and varied careers…and I am equally interested in Artists who appear once then disappear forever:

Anne Sparrow did just that! This Actress starred in the cult euro-sleaze film “The Sinful Dwarf”, then disappeared forever!

Paul McCartney Elvis Costello songs

Paul McCartney Meets Elvis Costello! “Flowers In The Dirt!” McCartney’s 80’s Collaborative Gem!

I have been looking back at Paul McCartney’s music – and every album is full of great musical surprises….like Elvis Costello!

Paul McCartney and Elvis Costello

Playing In “The Dirt!”

Here’s the musical road to “Flowers In The Dirt.” In the mid-80’s, McCartney was riding high with hit albums like “Tug Of War” and “Pipes Of Peace”…hit singles, acclaimed albums and big sales…but then came the release of one of his biggest flops:

paul-mccartney-press-to-play

McCartney’s “Press To Play” bombed – and for many, it’s one of his worst solo albums…I gave it a critical re-evaluation, which you can see here:

http://johnrieber.com/2015/10/24/paul-mccartneys-press-to-play-disaster-a-critical-re-examination/

After the critical and commercial failure of “Press To Play”, McCartney went back into the studio – with a new songwriting partner who looked like this!

Elvis-Costello-and Paul McCartney

Hello, Elvis!

Elvis Costello, one of the angriest songwriters of the late 70’s, had become one of the 80’s most acclaimed singer/songwriters….so when “Flowers In The Dirt” was released, Macca fans were surprised by the collaboration with Costello – let’s dive into “The Dirt!”

Paul McCartney Flowers In The Dirt

“I Been Hitting The Town And It Didn’t Hit Back!”

So begins the album – a great line from the power pop majesty of “My Brave Face” – this was McCartney’s last studio album of the 80’s, and it gets out of the gate in a big big way – with a big hit single!

Here’s the terrific music video:

my brave face paul mccartney

The song is catchy with a great hook and strong lyrics:

“Ever Since You Left I Have Been Trying To
Compose A “Baby Will You Please Come Home” Note
Meant For You.
As I Clear Away Another
Untouched Tv Dinner
From The Table I Laid For Two.

Now That I’m Alone Again
I Can’t Stop Breaking Down Again,
The Simplest Things Set Me Off Again
And Take Me To That Place
Where I Can’t Find My Brave Face,
Where I Can’t Find My Brave Face,
My Brave, My Brave, My Brave Face”

After that great start, the album goes right into another gem:

“Rough Ride”

Here is a great live version of the song – after Paul says hello to crowds all around the world!

Paul McCartney's best albums

“You Want Her Too”

Next up is another of the McCartney/Costello songs, and you can really tell that Costello’s most caustic, cynical side shows up.

McCartney has said that Costello mirrored John Lennon in certain aspects of his personality. Costello sings on “You Want Her Too” with McCartney.

“Distractions” and “We Got Married” were next, and “Married” benefits from guitar work by McCartney’s friend, Pink Floyd Guitarist David Gilmour…here’s a live version of the song:

“Put It There”

Up next on the album is one of Paul’s great songs, a father’s love for his son:

“Put it there if it weighs a ton
That’s what the father said to his younger son
I don’t care if it weighs a ton
As long as you and I are here, put it there”

Here is the terrific music video:

Paul McCartney Figure of Eight

Next up is another hit from the album:

“Figure Of Eight”

(Well) You’ve Got Me Dancing In A Figure Of Eight,
Don’t Know If I’m Coming Or Going, I’m Early Or Late.
Round And Round The Ring I Go,
I Want To Know, I Want To Know,
Why Can’t We Travel A Continuous Line?

Here is the music video:

“Figure Of Eight” is a great crowd-pleaser – and another hit single for Macca.

“This One” and “Don’t Be Careless Love” were next – “Careless” is another song co-written with Costello, as was the next song on the album:

Paul McCartney songs That Day Is Done

“That Day Is Done”

In his 2015 autobiography, “Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink”, Costello described the track “That Day Is Done” as, “the unhappy sequel to ” Veronica””, which he had also written with McCartney.

Paul and Linda McCartney

As always, Linda was on the album as well…

Here is a great live version of the “That Day Is Done” with a twist – it’s performed by Costello – from a 1997 David Letterman show!

“How Many People”, “Motor Of Love” and “Ou est le soleil” round out “Flowers In The Dirt”, which was released to critical acclaim – and went to #1 around the world – another “return to form” for an artist who was always under the microscope.

Paul McCartney Flowers In The Dirt

Paul recorded additional songs with Elvis, which ended up here:

To support “Flowers In The Dirt”, McCartney embarked on his first worldwide tour since Wings!

paul mccartney hidden songs peace in the neighborhood

I remember how exciting it was to see McCartney live after all those years…and I was in the audience when McCartney and Wings were in Seattle in the mid-70’s!

Finally, two of the McCartney/Costello songs appeared on Costello’s album “Spike”.
The songs were “Pads, Paws and Claws” and the hit single ” Veronica”.

Let me know your thoughts on “Flowers In The Dirt!”

mick jagger naked in a bathtub

Have you seen this Mick Jagger movie?

As a Studio Executive said when he saw the film:

“Even the bath water was dirty.”

Mick Jagger Naked

Hey, Let’s All Get Naked With Mick Jagger In A Bathtub!

Imagine Mick Jagger naked in a bathtub with a number of different women – in a movie performance he made at the height of the Rolling Stones popularity – around the time of “Honky Tonk Woman” and “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”…a classic British gangster movie that is now out on Blu-Ray!

Warner Archive Performance Blu-Ray

“This Film Is About Madness.”

The original film poster says it all…but equally “mad” is what was going on with Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones at the same time!

mick jagger keith richards

This is a classic movie tale: a film starring one of the world’s biggest rock stars, a film where he willing put himself naked in a bathtub – WITH KEITH RICHARD”S GIRLFRIEND! – is the stuff of movie legend!

Keith Richards and Mick Jagger

Talk About Your Love Triangle!

Here are Mick and Keith with Keith’s girlfriend Anita Pallenberg – and Anita was about to star with Mick Jagger in a movie…you can only imagine the potential for trouble…

mick jagger naked in a bathtub

Jumping In The Tub With Mick!

The script was full of sex scenes, including several with Mick in a bathtub. Can you say…AWKWARD? Let’s get right to it – the movie that led to the Mick Jagger – Keith Richards feud!

performance

Performance!

Warner Archive has a new Blu-Ray version of “Performance!” The film was a British gangster thriller starring Mick Jagger and James Fox – each playing dual roles! First, check out the trailer!

anita pallenberg-mick jagger-naked bath

“Performance” is a 1968 British crime drama directed by Donald Cammell and Nicolas Roeg, starring James Fox and Mick Jagger, in his film acting debut.

The film was produced in 1968 but not released until 1970!

Mick Jagger Performance

Why Two Years In The Vault?

So why was the film made in 1968, and released in 1970? First, let’s recap the plot of the movie….Chas is a violent and psychotic East London gangster – who needs a place to lie low after a hit that should never have been carried out. James Fox is terrific in the role of Chas…

PERFORMANCE James Fox

Chas finds the perfect cover in the form of a guest house run by the mysterious Mr. Turner, a one-time rock superstar, who is looking for the right spark to rekindle his faded talent. That is, of course, Mick Jagger – again playing two different roles.

Mick Jagger Performance

Mick is GREAT in the film – starring as a faded rock star with many decadent nights…oh, and as you know, he was starring with Keith’s GIRLFRIEND!

mick jagger anita pallenberg

Trouble On The Set!

As you can imagine, Keith wasn’t happy with his girlfriend’s movie choice.

According to wikipedia: “It was intended that the Rolling Stones would write the soundtrack but due to the complicated nature of the various relationships both on and off-screen, this never happened. It was widely rumored that Anita Pallenberg, then in a relationship with Keith Richards, and Mick Jagger played out sexual scenes in the film ‘for real'”…

pallenberg-jagger-bath

You can imagine that these scenes could cause trouble in the band, especially since Anita Pallenberg was a beautiful model…here she is with Keith…not a wallflower, that’s for sure…

anita-pallenberg

Whether true or not, the rumors swirled all around this film – gossip that the sex was real, that it broke up Keith and Anita…who knows the real truth, although there are some published accounts that say Anita was involved with both Stones…we’ll get Keith’s POV on this in a moment…

anita pallenberg

A Great “Performance!”

But forget about the gossip, the affairs, forget it all and just focus on the movie: the film is an explosive, violent and very graphic film – an experimental gangster film very much in line with the “anything goes” attitude prevalent in the late 60’s – and bravo to Mick Jagger for doing the film. If you have any interest in the counter-culture movies of the late 60’s and early 70’s, this is for you.

performance-mick jagger

Keith Takes His Guitar And Goes Home!

Now, back to the stories of Mick and Anita: when Keith Richards heard the rumors that were swirling around, he apparently took to sitting in his car outside the house where the film was being shot. Ultimately, he didn’t participate in a soundtrack album…

Performance soundtrack

The Film’s Notoriety!

The content of “Performance” was a surprise to the studio. It has been reported that during a test screening, one Warner executive’s wife vomited in shock. James Fox notes in Richard Lester’s TV series “British Cinema of the Sixties” that a Warner exec said of the scene depicting Jagger in a bath with Pallenberg and Breton, “even the bath water was dirty.”

pallenberg-jagger-bath

This “Dirty Bath Water” Got Shelved!

The response from the studio was to deny the film a cinematic release! It has been claimed that at one stage Warner Bros. wanted the negative to be destroyed. Instead, it sat on a shelf for two years before finally being released.

mick jagger in a bathtub

Luckily for us, the film exists, and is now available on a beautifully remastered Blu-Ray, thanks to Warner Archive – and it is a flawed masterpiece…whether it was one of the first wedges between Keith and Mick isn’t known…

“Is This The Real Life? Is This Just Fantasy?”

The opening line from one of the greatest rock songs of all time…from a band who was once hugely under appreciated and now is known as one of the greatest of all time!

Freddie Mercury And Queen

God Save The Queen!

Who’s kidding who? One of music’s most wildly entertaining bands lives forever, thanks to great live performances like this – “We Are The Champions” from Live Aid in 1985 :

queen-freddie mercury

Freddie Mercury was one of the most unique – and beloved – singers in all rock history. Those of us who grew up in the US really don’t know the depth of this fanbase in the UK…here is another example – three different live versions of “Tie Your Mother Down” all tied together into one amazing video:

queen-performing-on-stage-wallpaper

I have posted stories about Queen in the past, and wanted to look back at those musical moments that will last forever – beginning with perhaps their most famous work:

best Queen music

“Bohemian Rhapsody!”

Talk about a mini-opera! The brilliant song has been parodied – and honored – in many movies and TV shows. The album it came from was “A Night At The Opera”, a unique masterpiece that showed the amazing range of the band…

Queen

“Bohemian Rhapsody” was written by Freddie Mercury, written down “in blocks” (using note names instead of sheets) on a phone book. The other band members recorded their parts, with no idea how their tracks would be used. According to Wikipedia, the operatic section was originally intended to be only a short interlude of “Galileos” that connected the ballad and hard rock portions of the song!

In case you forget just how great the song – and the music video are – well, then feast your eyes on it again:

“A Night At The Opera” is a wildly entertaining album, and you can see my track-by-track breakdown here:

http://johnrieber.com/2014/02/23/queens-brilliant-night-at-the-opera-freddie-mercurys-musical-madness/

Of course, Queen had a long and successful career full of hits like “We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions”, “Somebody To Love” and “Radio Gaga”, but I love one song in particular:

Queen Flash Gordon

“Flash!”

The cult film “Flash Gordon” will also be remembered for the terrific theme song that was a pure a “Queen sound” as you can get…and did you know that this guy was behind the creation of “Star Wars”?

SAM-JONES-FLASH-GORDON-facebook

Yes, if there hadn’t been a “Flash Gordon” serialized movie from the “good old days”, George Lucas wouldn’t have created this movie!

And of course, one of Queen’s greatest songs was co-written with this guy!

DAvid Bowie RIP

“Under Pressure!”

David Bowie’s collaboration with Queen on the classic hit “Under Pressure” was a story of wine-quelled madness, which you can read about here:

Step Into Paradise!

Welcome to paradise! To me, this picture captures perfectly what life would be like in a tropical paradise – a fantasy escape that most can only dream about…

maldives-resort-island

Could I live here forever? Who knows – BUT I COULD TRY!

Even if you’ve had the chance to spend even a few days in paradise, it’s hard to imagine life there….

Tropical-Island-Paradise

For a few amazing travel writers, life in paradise was not only considered, it was attempted – and paradise is – like everything else in life – “in the eye of the beholder.”

As beautiful and idyllic as this looks…you are also entering a world that is completely different – and in many cases, dangerous…I have three incredible travel memoirs that will immerse you in the South Seas life, beginning with Paul Theroux, who decided to see this part of the world in a very unique way:

Paul Theroux Paddling The Pacific

The Happy Isles of Oceania: Paddling the Pacific!

Yes, he “paddled” across the South Pacific in a canoe! Paul Theroux is a legendary travel writer as well as Author of fiction like “The Mosquito Coast” – and quite the prickly traveler as well: Theroux spent 18 months in a one-man collapsible kayak exploring such exotic Pacific islands as New Zealand, Australia, the Soloman and Cook Islands, Fiji, Samoa, Tahiti, Easter Island, and Hawaii. His adventure makes for an amazingly entertaining book.

As one review states:

“Never a kind-hearted chronicler of place, he sets out on this voyage in an especially dour mood, leaving behind a failed marriage and expecting to be diagnosed with cancer at any moment. Soon after he escapes the crowded towns of Australia, however, he starts to lose some of his harsh edge and enjoy his travels, which ultimately heal him. A brilliant storyteller with an eye for the absurd, Theroux takes the reader to little-known places where time seems to have stood still and people lead simple lives totally unrelated to 20th-century America.”

Theroux Author Photo credit Steve McCurry Studios

This unique canoe trip is full of comedy, tragedy, politics and a touch of the mundane as well. The Author is a terrific writer, and you really feel you are there on the trip with him – and what a trip it is!

legendary writer Paul Theroux

Another reviewer raved:

“Any perceptive reader with a sense of adventure couldn’t help but feel drawn to the islands as Theroux describes them – their idiosyncrasies, history, culture, beauty and repulsiveness in equal measure – which speckle the Pacific Ocean like stars in the night sky.”

south seas adventures

Here is one short excerpt from the book:

“There were stars everywhere, above us, and reflected in the sea along with the sparkle of phosphorescence streaming from the bow wave. When I poked an oar in the ocean and stirred it, the sea glittered with twinkling sea-life. … It was as though we were in an old rickety rocket ship.

It was an image that afterwards often came to me when I was traveling in the Pacific, that this ocean was as vast as outer space, and being on this boat was like shooting from one star to another, the archipelagoes like galaxies, and the islands like isolated stars in an empty immensity of watery darkness, and this sailing was like going slowly from star to star, in vitreous night.”

Once you devour this book, try his journey around the Mediterranean, “The Pillars Of Hercules” – or his harrowing trip through Africa, which you read more about here:

http://johnrieber.com/2014/07/16/the-dark-heart-of-africa-paul-therouxs-last-train-to-zona-verde-his-personal-heart-of-darkness/

There are many ways to get to the South Pacific….for Lucy Irvine, her trip began when she answered this ad in a London newspaper:

Castaway newspaper ad

Her life was never the same. After spending a year as a “wife” on a desert island north of Australia, she wrote a bestselling book about it!

castaway

Irvine’s “Castaway” is a fascinating book, and she’s an incredible writer:

“The sun is spread, hot and arched, above the reef like a woman in abandon, sky shimmering like glistening skin…”

Yet her greatest adventure happened a few years later…

“Only two hours ago I’d been living through some of the worst moments I’d ever experienced, during which an understanding of the precariousness of life had been borne in me with frightening force.”

Lucy Irvine Travels “Faraway!”

First of all, what a beautiful cover for a book. Welcome to Pigeon Island, surrounded by many other, smaller islands like the one on the cover. Lucy Irvine’s bestselling book “Castaway” documented her year on a deserted island, and after all of the acclaim, Irvine returned to a “regular” life, until the Author found herself with a unique opportunity for a sequel!

map of pigeon island

In 1999, Lucy Irvine took her three children to the farthest corner of the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific to live for a year on remote Pigeon Island…look at the center of the map above and notice the tiny mark for Pigeon island next to Reef Islands…

Salomon Island vacations

Irvine’s invitation to live in this isolated paradise came from an intrepid 80-year-old Pigeon Island resident, Diana Hepworth, who set sail from England years earlier with her family in their own search for a faraway paradise.

“Faraway” is not only Irvine’s story, it is the story of the Hepworth family and their amazing adventure years earlier…the two stories are intertwined, and both are fascinating…

LUCY IRVINE

“Faraway” tells the story of Irvine’s latest adventure – and what it was like to take her three boys with her, settling into a completely different life in the middle of the south seas…

south seas islands

“Faraway” also is the story of the Hepworths – an adventurous young couple who raised a family in a faraway land – and “Faraway” beautifully captures what life on a south seas island is like…because few islands are more isolated than this one…

As you can see, I fantasize about living in this tropical oasis, but as you will see from these books, it’s a difficult life as well…here’s a book that gets right to the crux of the matter:

sex lives of cannibals

Look at the title of this book! How can you not love it! Yes, there is a history of cannibalism in this part of the world as well!

Great travel writer J. Maarten Troost got to actually live in the South Seas when his wife was there as a official for the US government…and he found an interesting fact about the place:

“The man was eaten for his ‘mana’, that is the invisible power that resides in the head.”

Yes, it was home to cannibals! But that’s what makes the adventure so much fun, right? I mean, there has to be SOME price to pay for living here:

resort_hotel_solomon_islands_photo_gov

Time For Great Troost Travel!

Troost has written many travel books, all based on his personal experience of living in the South Pacific with his wife…here, for example is a short passage from the beginning of one book – the Author speaking to a french man about what makes the french the french:

“Dreams, he said, while pale and smelling of regurgitated chicken, do sometimes come true and this, he concluded, was how we endure the tragedy, the comedy, of life, and for a moment I was reminded of why I love the French – not even blowing chunks will ruin ‘la grande romance’ of it all.”

best travel books headhunters

I love this Writer! J. Maarten Troost has written four terrific travel books – I will share his other work in a moment, but his most recent took him back to the South Seas:

south seas islands

“Headhunters On My Doorstep” is the story of Troost returning to the islands where he lived when he wrote his “Cannibals” book…

Roost returns to his old island home after several years away to see how his life changed since he lived there. Troost has changed as well – and the book is far more personal than any he has written before, but as always, beautifully written…

Marlon-Brandos-South-Sea-Island-Paradise-Resort

Here is an idea of Troost’s writing style, from page 159 of the book:

“Do you have some time?” Celine asked. Oh, I don’t know. I’m on an island in the middle of nowhere, without an ongoing ticket or a way off, amusing myself by going on desultory hikes to the set of ‘Survivor: Marquesas’ in the drenching rain. Yeah, I think I’ve got a couple of minutes to spare…

Survivor-4--Marquesas-

Yes, one of the areas explored by the Author is the location of the 4th season of the reality show “Survivor”…but Troost isn’t there to play a game – he brings to life a culture that is vibrant, proud, and nearly decimated by their interaction with white people.

best travel writers

As you can see, he’s got a way with words, which is why the book is so much fun to read, and full of fascinating information – about cannibalism, for example.

“The man was eaten for his ‘mana’, that is the invisible power that resides in the head.”

tawara

There is so much to love about this book, but it is a cautionary tale as well…as the world’s climate threatens to destroy an entire way of life…

south seas island flooding

In many ways, this is his most personal – and important – work. Of course, this should leave you breathless to read ALL of Troost’s books, so just click on my link below for my story about them all!

Paul McCartney solo music

“I loved that record because it was so simple. And there was so much to see and to hear. It was just Paul. There was no adornment at all … There was no attempt made to compete with the things he had already done. And so out he stepped from the shadow of the Beatles.”

With those words, Neil Young captures perfectly the simplicity and brilliance of Paul McCartney’s debut solo album, “McCartney”…

McCartney solo album 1970

Time To Celebrate A Classic!

I wanted to look at the “completely solo” debut album from Paul McCartney. It was widely derided at the time of its release, as Paul was blamed for the breakup of The Beatles – and fans were hurting and angry – as a result, Paul was under fire from all sides!

Paul McCartney another-day

The Album’s First Single – That Wasn’t!

The story of Paul’s solo career begins with this classic song “Another Day”, which was the first single of McCartney’s solo career – but “Another Day” was actually written and previewed during the Beatles’ Let It Be sessions in 1969, and officially recorded for Paul’s SECOND album!

Here’s a great music video with lots of footage of Paul and Linda:

Paul & Linda McCartney

There are so many books that cover the breakup of The Beatles, and McCartney’s decision to release solo music, including a single that wasn’t even on McCartney’s first solo album!

paul_mccartney_solo_1970

The Majesty of “McCartney!”

“McCartney” was Paul’s debut solo album, released by Apple in April 1970 – recorded by Macca during a period of depression and confusion, following John Lennon’s private announcement in September 1969 that he was leaving the Beatles!

Beatles Abbey Road pictures

The Breakup Of The Beatles!

The band was also in the process of releasing “Let It Be” at the same time as “McCartney.” So the press and public were stunned when a press release came out from McCartney in the form of a self-interview that included promotional copies of “McCartney”. This shocking announcement led to a formal acknowledgement of the group’s break-up in April 1970. The band was no more…

Paul & Linda McCartney

The Recording Of “McCartney”:

Apart from wife Linda’s vocal contributions, McCartney performed the entire album by himself, playing every instrument. The songs felt like a series of sketches that were composed by McCartney, a back-to-basics style that had been the original concept for the Let It Be album…

Here is how wikipedia describes this time in Paul’s life: “Following John Lennon’s announcement in a band meeting on 20 September 1969 that he wanted a “divorce” from the Beatles,Paul McCartney withdrew to his farm in Campbeltown, Scotland. Author Robert Rodriguez describes his frame of mind as: “brokenhearted, shocked, and dispirited at the loss of the only job he had ever known”.

Paul and Linda McCartney

McCartney’s period in seclusion with his family coincided with widespread rumours in America that he had died – an escalation of the three-year-old “Paul Is Dead” conspiracy theory. The rumour was broken only by journalists from BBC Radio and Life magazine tracking him down at his farm, High Park.

How Paul Felt At The Time!

Here is how Paul describes this time in his life:

“I nearly had a breakdown. I suppose the hurt of it all, and the disappointment, and the sorrow of losing this great band, these great friends … I was going crazy.”

“McCartney” Track By Track!

Here’s a look at the album:

It begins with the :43 seconds of “The Lovely Linda” – which prepares listeners for an album full of short fragments – short stories in a way…this performance of “The Lovely Linda” was only intended as a test of the new equipment, it was included as the opening track, complete with the sound of McCartney giggling at the end of the recording!

Paul McCartney solo album

“That Would Be Something” and “Valentine Day” are next, the latter one of three selections on “McCartney” that Paul says he “ad-libbed on the spot”, leading to one of the most beautiful songs Paul has ever written:

Linda McCartney photos

“Every Night”

This McCartney classic continues to be played widely today, a gorgeous song that feels light and carefree – fascinating when you consider Paul’s mood at the time.

Here is a live version from “MTV Unplugged” in 1992:

“Hot as Sun/Glasses”, “Junk” and “Man We Was Lonely” finish up the first side of the record, with “Junk” being a beautifully ballad…

Paul McCartney solo photos Linda McCartney

“Oo You” is the first song on side two of the album.

This song reminds me of “I Got A Feeling”, with Paul offering up a blues riff and a great bit of guitar playing…

“Momma Miss America” is next, followed by another song originally written as a Beatles song, “Teddy Boy” – here is the original version that was finally released as part of The Beatles Anthology project:

“Singalong Junk” follows, basically “Junk” without vocals, which allows you to appreciate what a beautifully written tune it is….and then comes the album’s classic song:

“Maybe I’m Amazed!”

The album’s masterpiece is “Maybe I’m Amazed”, as pure a McCartney classic as he ever wrote – and one of many love songs written directly to Linda.

Here is a terrific live performance of the song, performed during the 1976 Wings tour:

“Kreen-Akrore” finishes up the album…

The Beatles React!

Fans were angry at the time, thinking that Paul had caused the breakup of The Beatles.

McCartney’s former bandmates also voiced their disappointment with the album. Shortly after its release, Harrison described “Maybe I’m Amazed” and “That Would Be Something” as “great”, but the rest, he said, “just don’t do much for me”.

john-lennon-feud

“Rubbish!”

In a December 1970 interview with Rolling Stone editor Jann Wenner, Lennon dismissed McCartney as “rubbish” and expressed a belief that his primal therapy-inspired album John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band would “probably scare [McCartney] into doing something decent”!

paul_mccartney_solo_1970

Time has, of course, been very kind to “McCartney”.

In 1999, Neil Young inducted McCartney into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and praised McCartney, saying:

“I loved that record because it was so simple. And there was so much to see and to hear. It was just Paul. There was no adornment at all … There was no attempt made to compete with the things he had already done. And so out he stepped from the shadow of the Beatles.”

Paul McCartney solo album

Paul continues to play many of the songs in concert, and much of the shorter, more experimental music on the album inspired his project like Twin Freaks and The Fireman.

Paul McCartney RAM

“Ram” was also derided upon release, but stands as one of his greatest solo albums…here is a look at this recording of the album, and his bitter feud with John Lennon:

“Lawrence plays Zambrini, a farmer and cafe owner first seen having a nocturnal chat with a recently exhumed dead body he’s about to feed to his pigs, whom he explains aloud have developed a taste for human flesh after snacking on another poor sap who passed out drunk in their vicinity. I love the story behind “Pigs!” Thanks to the terrific home video company Vinegar Syndrome, we now know the full story! Marc Lawrence was once a blacklisted character actor in the 50’s, and he was so passionate about “Pigs” that he mortgaged his own house to fund the movie! Lawrence wrote, directed, and starred in “Pigs”, which had a tortuous release in the 70’s under a variety of titles!

Vinegar Syndrome PIGS

Here’s what the great website “dvddrive-in.com” says:

“Released by distributor Classic Films as PIGS, the distributors – as explained in the intertitles for the poster gallery – eventually bought out Lawrence’s interest in the film and recruited him to shoot a new opening with an exorcism for which they then released the film again in 1974 throughout the 1970s under variations of THE STRANGE EXORCISM OF LYNN HART, LOVE EXORCIST, and BLOOD PEN!”

Nice Aim 007!

In this Bond film, a group of mobsters barge in on 007 while he’s in a Vegas hotel room with a woman. The thugs throw the woman out the window, and when Bond sees her land in the swimming pool, he compliments Marc on his aim. Lawrence has the classic line in response:

“I didn’t know there was a pool down there”

A Dubbed “Andress!”

Here is some great trivia: Ursula’s Swiss accent was so strong that her dialogue was dubbed – that’s not even her voice in the film! Still, it didn’t keep her from stardom. As Andress said:

“This bikini made me into a success. As a result of starring in Dr. No as the first Bond girl, I was given the freedom to take my pick of future roles and to become financially independent.”

And so she did, moving on to a series of big hit films with Hollywood’s biggest stars!
